Yes the protagonist is a redhead! A young girl falls in love with a near-death sailor and is assumed to be "away" (taken by the faeries). From then on, none of the women would be the same. So with that to not give too much away, this book gave me a sence of pride in the way it portrayed the Irish People as always overcoming their tribulations and pressing on.
