Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin
Review by: Suzy

This is a series of 6 books about friends who live in San Francisco. The series starts in the late 70's and goes into the 80's. You may have seen the first two made into mini-series; the very first one was a pretty close adaptation, but the second one did NOT do the book justice, possibly because it was filmed in MONTREAL and because most of the original cast did not reprise their roles.

Even if you have seen the TV series, you really should read the books. They are a unique and delightful experience. The series is one I have read many times, and I never fail to be captivated by its sly wit, cleverness, and ribald humor. Maupin has a way of making you believe the most outrageous things, from a cannibal cult in Grace Cathedral to Jim Jones of Jonestown posing as a socialite, and of making you truly care about his characters. Enjoy!
