Shelters of Stone by Jean Auel
Review by: DrLynn
In the category of "pre-historic fiction", once again Jean Auel has written a winner, and once again I am hooked on her latest book. Shelters of Stone is fourth in the Earth's Children series which started with Clan of the Cave Bear. The latest novel follows the further adventures of our hero and heroine, Jondalar and Ayla, as they return to live with his people. Many book series tend to become a bit stale, especially if they feature the same characters. But Ms. Auel develops her characters more fully with each writing; they become more real and believable. She has also researched so thoroughly in the fields of archeology and ancient cultures that one is left wondering if art, religion, hunting, and animal domestication could have occurred by any other way than those described in her novels. I am also left with the uncomfortable question: Do I have the ingenuity, courage, and physical stamina to survive in situations similar to those which challenge these characters?
