Kestrel - I love makeup!! Sharing my favorite products and tips is a blast for me, because as an ultra-pale redhead with transparent skin (so that *everything* shows- even blue veins!), cosmetics are an essential. I love trying new products, but I've found several things that are a permanent part of my repertoire. Also, at the end of this piece, I've provided the URLs for the products I've mentioned, as well as some of my other favorite cosmetics websites.
Just so you know, my skin is extremely pale with pink undertones and coppery freckles, my hair is fiery auburn (that means it looks bright red in sunlight, but darker auburn indoors), and my skin is both dry and acne-prone (the double curse!).
Foundation and concealer:
Au Courant mineral foundation (custom-blended color)
Mineral foundations ROCK! If you haven't tried them, you are missing foundation heaven. They cover amazingly well (even red acne scars), look completely natural, let your skin breathe, they're waterproof, I could go on and on - There are two tricks to using minerals, though: (1) finding the perfect color; (2) and perfecting your application technique. Many redheads love Youngblood's minerals in 'Pearl,' but for me they were too dark and too yellow. So I contacted Sue at Au Courant, and she custom blended the perfect mineral shade for me. Many women have trouble learning how to apply minerals, and believe me, everyone does it differently! For tips on using minerals, visit the 'Welcome Home' forum at Delphi.
Loose powder:
I have two favorites: (1) Sonia Kashuk Barely There Loose Powder in 'Naked' (available only at Target); and (2) Amphigory Triple Milled Loose Powder in 'Lavender'.
If you have pale skin, you must try lavender-colored loose powder. It sounds weird, but it will make your skin look amazing. It emphasizes paleness, which I love, so stay away if you are trying to disguise your fair skin. But if you love to flaunt it (a la Nicole Kidman in 'Moulin Rouge'), try it!
Eyeshadow:
Amphigory Shimmery Shadow in 'Fl3sh' [sic] (a shimmery light flesh tone) and 'Drab' (a warm 'military green' with golden shimmer)
Visit Amphigory's website. They have wonderful, amazing, fun products at incredibly reasonable prices.
Blush:
BeneFit's BeneTint
This is the most amazing blush! It's a ruby-colored liquid, and it looks totally natural on the cheeks. Great for pale redheads! Sometimes I use it straight from the bottle, other times I mix it with my sunblock to create a cream blush.
Mascara:
Just For Redheads Mascara Naturelle in 'GingerRed'
I love, love, love JFR's mascaras! They are high quality, and come in multiple shades 'just for redheads.' I hate black mascara on redheads, so these products are a lifesaver.
Eyebrows:
Paula's Select Brow Tint in 'Auburn'
Lips:
Paula's Select Soft Matte Lipstick in 'Copper' (new copper penny shimmery color, great for redheads!)
Jane Satin Lipstick in 'Browned Down Red' (a good 'red' for a redhead; my favorite to wear with black clothes)- available in drugstores and discount stores
L'Oreal Hydrasoft Lipcolor in 'Hushed Espresso' (slightly bolder-than-natural, good for everyday wear)- available in drugstores and discount stores
CoverGirl Triple Lipstick in 'Praline' (another good everyday, natural color)- available in drugstores and discount stores
Avon PerfectWear Lipstick in 'Heavenly Cappuccino' (this is what I'm wearing in the wedding photo, and this a transfer-resistant lipstick)
Wet 'n' Wild Lip Gloss in 'Bronzeberry' (a fun shimmery color when I want to look young instead of professional)- available in drugstores and discount stores
Other products:
All Terrain AquaSport Performance Sunblock SPF 30+
This is the best sunblock I've ever found! It goes great under makeup because it is completely dry. No kidding! It feels like you don't even have sunblock on! I wear this every single day, even when it's cloudy. Must protect that easily-burned skin.
Clean & Clear Oil-Absorbing Sheets (available in drugstores and discount stores)
These are great for blotting shine during the day without having to cake on additional powder.
