Mitzi - Actually I thought to use my "Tip" for a discussion of natural curly hair as I have noticed that many redheads are also curly heads! No matter how well my makeup looks, if my hair is wrong...well, let's just say that it's a 'bad day'. I thought that with age that I might outgrow this phenomenon but apparently not!
Most curly hair is considered to be of fine texture. However, I have moderately coarse hair with medium curl that will 'take-on' gallons of water in our famous southern humidity leaving me with a mass of frizz. After years of coping, I can not over-stress the importance of product selection. Having read every word of the naturalcurly.com website, I would highly recommend it, but have also developed my own techniques.
I use a shampoo designed to remove deposits of hair product and the minerals from our 'hard' water, BioSilk Shampoo Out is a good one (I buy mine on eBay). Rich conditioners are also a must since putting moisture into the hair and then sealing it in, with the proper products, actually has given me more frizz protection then any of the numerous gels that I've ever tried. Two conditioners that I really love are BioSilk Pre-Plus and Sealer Plus--use them together. I also have found a generic of
Matrix Biolage at the local Sally's store that is wonderful. An important hint is to never totally rinse out conditioner. As a final finish on my wet hair, I use BioSilk Silk Therapy. However a generic version of Paul Mitchell's The Cream, also from Sally's, is great as it contains a small amount of gel in a finishing cream and does not leave a hard or wet look.
The most important part (beyond getting that all important 'good' haircut) is to use a diffuser on your hairdryer and to NOT completely dry the hair. Curly hair must be left partially wet and be allowed to air dry without touching it. The more you touch or arrange your hair before and after it is dry, the more frizz you produce. After hair is dried you can give your curls a slight squeeze to release them a bit and even add a small spray of "Happy Hair" (in an aerosol, available at Sally's).
My goal is to keep my hair controlled but soft and also shiny without looking wet. I hope that you enjoy these tips!
