carolinaderm - I had the most problems finding good make-up as a teenager. Now, it's a bit better, but it's still hard to find good colors in general stores.
For any of you that have had a problem with moderate acne (even as an adult), it's important to get a good face wash and astringent. I have tried many things, even succumbing to purchasing Proactiv from an infomercial! Since, redheads usually have sensitive skin, gentle products work well. In the States, I used Freeman and Swiss Ives products. They are relatively cheap and are of good quality. Here in France, the BEST thing I have come across is Garnier Pure products. I use their facewash and astringent, which not only rids excess oil and dirt but also closes your pores. I'm not sure whether this product is available in the States, but it is worth mentioning in case any of you can find it someplace. On another note, it's also nice to use Oil of Olay on your face, regularly or from time to time, to smoothen your face and 'perhaps' decrease signs of aging. Or, so they say! :)
For mascara, I always try to find plain brown. It is rare to come across this, so I usually just take black-brown. Because that is dark enough, I lightly put on one coat to make my eyes subtly stand out. Rimmel is a good brand that is at a good price. L'oreal is the best, but you are going to pay 7 dollars for one tube. Rimmel will cost around 3 dollars and you can usually find it at most Wal-Marts.
I'm not much of an eye shadow person and on the occasion that I do wear it, I stick to the browns and neutrals. However, I love color and in the spring and summer, I dive into apricots and even cool pinks and very light yellows. Stay away from reds, purples, dark charcoals, and bright pinks. Usually orangy based colors will look the best!
For lips, Bonne Bell lip glosses are superb!! They provide a hint of color, great scents, and long-lasting softness. It isn't too greasy, so it won't feel like your lips are drowning in Vaseline! For lips, I use L'oreal #843 Toasted Almond in the Fall and Winter and in the spring and summer, I use L'oreal #415 Exotic Apricot. Unfortunately with lip colors, they change them often, but it is easy to find something that is similiar to your favorite. With lip sticks, it is 'ok' to spend the extra buck because cheap lipsticks will look cheap on your lips, whereas good quality ones will beautify them.
Take time when you put on your make-up. One good thing with redheads is that we don't have to wear a lot of make-up to be beautiful. We are naturally that way! :)
